Information Security

Information Security

There are three key principles in information security, confidentiality, availability and integrity. This is known as the CIA Triad.

On the whole when we disclose personal information to a business or organisation we trust that our details will be kept confidential and safe. We assume that the information we provide will be shared only with parties that have a genuine vested interest and not for sales purposes for instance. It is virtually impossible to run your life without disclosing personal details, for example getting a driving license or mortgage. A breach of confidentiality occurs when information is accessed that is personal or confidential by someone who does not have authorised permission to use it. It is easier to breach confidentiality than you may think. If you are using a computer and allow someone else to look over your shoulder whilst looking at confidential or privileged information, it would be considered a breach of confidentiality.

The area of information security has grown enormously over recent years and so has its significance. It is a popular career choice and there are many different ways of gaining access to the field. There are many different areas that you can specialise in including information systems auditing and digital forensic science to name just two.

Information security has seen a massive growth in recent years, particularly due to the use of the internet for terrorism and the amount of data processing and electronic business that is carried out through the internet nowadays. With the internet being used in this way and to this extent in the current age, internet security as well as security for all aspects of our personal information, is hugely important.
